My name is Jaime, and I’m a fourth-year Business Administration student at San José State University, concentrating in Hospitality, Tourism and Event Management. I currently work as a marketing intern at SJC, a role that began as a summer internship and has since evolved into a year-long opportunity.
This internship has helped me grow into a budding marketer, teaching me valuable lessons about myself and my abilities. I’ve been exposed to a dynamic working environment where I’m learning essential soft skills like communication, adaptability and teamwork. These experiences are shaping not only my professional capabilities but also my confidence and approach to challenges, helping set a strong foundation for my future career.
Before diving into the nitty-gritty of my role, let me tell you about my first impression of SJC— it instantly made me feel welcomed and excited for what was to come!
A Fun First Impression
When I walked into the office for my interview, I saw a huge poster of two adorable baby chickens. It made me smile and set the tone for a fun and welcoming place to work. That first impression turned out to be right! From day one, everyone was so friendly and supportive.
What Makes This Internship Great
One of the best things about this internship is how flexible and open it is. My supervisor encourages me to share my opinions and try new things that interest me. It made me feel confident and valued.
I’ve also had the chance to meet and talk with each person on the Marketing and Communications team, along with other divisions within the Airport such as Customer Experience. They shared their career stories, responsibilities and advice. These conversations have been super helpful as I think about my own career.
A Day in the Life
This supportive and dynamic environment has made every day different and exciting. Here’s a look at some of the interesting projects I’ve worked on.
- Explored SJC’s new brand identity, launched in 2023, and learned how it reflects the Airport’s goals. I got hands-on experience with brand security, consistency and connecting with audiences.
- Wrote blogs and updated content on web pages to keep the website engaging, user-friendly and on-brand. Check out my blog about the Top 9 Selfie Spots at SJC!
- Analyzed passenger interactions with the chatbot to understand how users navigate the website and made recommendations to improve content.
- Researched and designed fun promotional items that show off SJC’s personality.
- Helped plan and execute the 2024 AAAE Operations and Technology Symposium, hosting 300+ attendees.
- Attended and worked at 20 events (including offsite events at Bay FC and San José Earthquakes games), connecting with over 11,000 community members along the way.
A huge part of my role involved managing swag! I handled promo items and helped run our internal employee store. Not only does it boost employee morale and engagement, but it also strengthens our culture and promotes the SJC brand in a really fun way. I created a handy inventory spreadsheet to keep everything organized. From packing and shipping out prize packs for giveaway winners to fulfilling customer orders, it was such a cool experience—it felt like running my very own little retail shop!
I’m not stuck at a desk all day, either. One of the coolest parts of the job is taking breaks in the terminal. Watching planes take off and land while enjoying lunch or coffee was incredibly relaxing. From ticket counter operations to jet bridges and baggage claim carousels, I’ve had the opportunity to tour various areas of the Airport, courtesy of Delta Air Lines, alongside fellow interns. These experiences gave me valuable insights into the aviation industry and how its operations come together seamlessly.
While my internship has been an incredible experience, I’m not the only one who feels this way. Here’s what some of my fellow interns have to say about their time at SJC.
Insights from Other SJC Interns
Alexander Kokhanevich
"Go above and beyond on your tasks to show off your abilities, but also enjoy your time here by having fun, meeting all the friendly staff and going on tours."
Alexander worked as an intern in the Terminal Management department, where he updated internal maps of the Airport, worked on family-friendly travel initiatives and collaborated with the Amadeus team to improve information display screens. He learned the importance of attention to detail in airport operations and valued the supportive work environment at SJC.
Emma Johnston
"Trust me, I asked about a million questions and picked everyone’s brain about their tasks. Being able to ask questions helped me learn and grow this summer."
Emma interned in Security Compliance, ensuring that Airport employees followed safety protocols, auditing CCTV cameras and assisting with security signage. She discovered the importance of clear communication and teamwork, which are essential for a smoothly running airport.
Megan Trovinger
"Embrace every opportunity and don’t hesitate to ask questions! Get involved in projects outside your responsibilities—they can offer valuable new perspectives."
Megan, an Airport Operations-Security Compliance Intern, conducted signage and camera audits, updated the Airport security plan and supported compliance efforts. She appreciated the opportunity to contribute to critical safety initiatives and expand her knowledge of airport operations.
Shaista Basheeruddin
"SJC Airport is a fantastic platform for opportunities. Utilize them to the fullest and don’t hesitate to share your ideas."
Shaista, a graduate intern in the Planning and Development Division, worked on stormwater treatment feasibility updates and power consumption studies. She enjoyed learning about construction processes and project management while also participating in Airport tours and gaining insights into operational systems.
What I’ve Learned
This internship has been such an amazing experience – it’s honestly been a game-changer for me both personally and professionally. I’ve learned so much about airport marketing and all the moving pieces that make it work, but the best part has been getting a sneak peek into what it’s like to be a professional marketer. It gave me a broader perspective on how different strategies and techniques connect with audiences, build a strong brand and meet organizational goals.
Looking back, I realize that the fun and welcoming vibe I felt when I first walked into the office—thanks to that adorable baby chicken poster—perfectly captures what this internship has been about: learning, growing and having a little fun along the way. This has been an unforgettable journey, and I’m deeply grateful for the chance to be part of SJC’s story.
If you’re thinking about interning or working at SJC, I say go for it! It’s a unique experience that’s fun and rewarding. Keep an eye out for internship opportunities with SJC or with the City of San José here.
