SJC Sustainability and Environment

Environment

San José Mineta International Airport (SJC) protects public health, reduces environmental impacts and supports the City of San José’s climate goals. Our work spans two key areas: Environmental Compliance, which ensures airport operations and development meet regulatory requirements, and Sustainability, which advances initiatives that reduces emissions, conserve resources and strengthen long-term resilience.  These efforts support Climate Smart San José, the City’s plan for carbon neutrality, clean transportation, renewable energy, water conservation and waste reduction.

Environmental Compliance

This program oversees permitting and reporting, stormwater protection, hazardous materials management, air quality and emissions and environmental review for capital projects. These activities ensure SJC meets local, state and federal regulations while protecting surrounding communities and natural resources.

Sustainability & Climate Action

This program drives improvements in energy efficiency and renewable electricity, fleet and ground transportation electrification, waste reduction and climate resilience. These efforts reduce operational impacts and prepare SJC for a low-carbon future.

Together, Compliance safeguards the community today, and Sustainability positions SJC for tomorrow, creating an airport that is efficient, resilient, and aligned with the City’s climate vision.
