R. William Highlander


R. William (Bill) Highlander moved to San Jose after retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army. His military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit (2), Bronze Star Medal (2 for valor, 1 for meritorious service), Purple Heart, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Combat Infantryman’s badge, Airborne wings, Range tab, Army General Staff badge and DOD badge.

A graduate of Rutgers University (B.A., Sociology) and the University of Georgia (M.A., Journalism), Bill led corporate communications at FMC Defense and United Defense, was a VP at Calpine, and editor of the Evergreen Times. A published author, he continues to write books and articles. A volunteer board member for several non-profits, he currently serves as a trustee for Symphony Silicon Valley. He is a member of San Jose Rotary Club.

Bill hopes to assist the airport staff and the city council to improve the services at Mineta Airport with more non-stop flights, increased passenger numbers, security and enhanced image of San Jose.

A San Jose resident for more than 30 years, Bill and his wife, Ida, reside at the Silver Creek Valley Country Club.
