Celebrating Chris Fernandez, SJC’s Top 40 Under 40 Aviation Pro

Chris Fernandez

In the fast-paced world of airport management, it's not every day that a rising star emerges who can seamlessly integrate expertise, innovation and dedication into their work. However, Chris Fernandez, a member of the Facilities and Engineering team at San José Mineta International Airport (SJC), has done just that. We are delighted to announce that Chris has been recognized as one of 2023 Airport Business Top 40 Under 40, a prestigious ranking that spotlights the best and brightest young talents in aviation.

At just 32 years old, Chris Fernandez made a remarkable transition to SJC from a background in commercial fire alarm safety systems. Over the course of seven years, Chris has become a pivotal force in driving innovation and collaboration across the Airport's diverse divisions.

His journey at SJC began as the Airport's Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) Program Manager. His remarkable skills and leadership abilities quickly earned him a new role — leading the charge on the Airport's employee engagement program. In this capacity, he served as a liaison between SJC, City Hall and Gallup, collaborating with Deputy Directors and champions from each division.

Under Chris’ guidance, comprehensive action plans were developed to address survey results. This led to consistent year-over-year growth in employee engagement across three survey cycles. The positive change in the workplace environment has benefited all members of the Airport team.

His impact at SJC extends far beyond employee engagement though. He evaluated and revised inter-divisional workflow processes, leading to significant time savings and process improvements. By identifying redundancies and inefficiencies and introducing overhauls, he saved employees several hours to several days' worth of work, allowing them to focus on pressing business needs.

As the overseer of the Airport's fire alarm and life safety system, Chris has managed numerous large-scale projects that ensure the safety of SJC Airport, his colleagues and our passengers. These projects include critical alarm system component replacements, fire pump replacements and the installation of innovative nitrogen systems to combat sprinkler pipe corrosion. Most recently, he began the multi-million-dollar replacement of the aging sprinkler system in one of the Airport’s parking facilities.

As the CMMS Program Manager, Chris Fernandez plays a vital role by supplying essential business intelligence data that aids in justifying the creation of new positions within the Facilities and Engineering team.

Chris’ unwavering commitment to excellence, his ability to drive positive change and his dedication to the well-being of all Airport employees make him a deserving recipient of Airport Business Magazine's Top 40 Under 40 recognition. His accomplishments, both within the Airport and in the broader aviation industry, are a testament to his remarkable talent and potential. We are very happy to see Chris nominated alongside other outstanding young professionals who are shaping the future of aviation. Congratulations, Chris Fernandez, on this well-deserved recognition!
