Airport Construction Update

2009 Construction Milestones Coming Up
The modernization of SJC’s terminal facilities remains on schedule and on budget, and we’re moving quickly to the finish line next year.  We’ll reach major milestones for the project in 2009, especially the upgrades at Terminal A that will be completed by the end of the year.  Here’s a summary of what you can expect see this year at SJC, and you can check construction progress photos here.

Terminal A

  • New Ticket Lobbies to Open in May.  The expansion and relocation of the Terminal A ticket lobbies to street level will be completed this spring, and we expect to open them for service in mid-May.  The new ticket lobbies will have 60% more ticketing stations than we have now, and they will help our airlines serve passengers more comfortably and efficiently.  In addition, when we’re done, Terminal A will have a longer curb for departing passengers to unload and conveniently check in at street level.
  • Expanded Security Checkpoint to Open This Fall.  Once the ticket counters are gone from the second level this spring, we’ll start the renovations and expansion of the TSA security checkpoint in Terminal A.  We’ll have space for eight new check-in lanes that will replace the six we currently have, and they will be wider with modern equipment. When the project is completed in November, check-in will be more comfortable and efficient with lots of room for passengers to line up in the security area itself.
  • New Restaurants and Shops Beginning This Summer.  Terminal A will have more space for new concessions and upgraded waiting lounges once we’re done with the expansion of the building on the “airside.”  This is scheduled for completion this summer with new restaurants and shops opening then.
  • Automated Baggage Security System Completed Next Winter. The Airport’s $23 million replacement of its baggage security system for Terminal A will be done around December this year, marking the substantial completion of the major improvements to the terminal.  With the help of a TSA grant of $18 million, San José will have a state-of-the-art automated system with greater capacity and efficiency for both TSA and our airlines.

Terminal B/North Concourse

  • Interim Opening of North Concourse of Terminal B This Summer.  We will open five gates in the new North Concourse in July to serve Southwest Airlines while we work on Terminal A renovations.  Passengers will be able get their first glimpse of the new terminal building, which will have a total of 12 gates when done next year.  Until Terminal B is ready to completely open, Southwest passengers will continue to check in at Terminal A, and the airline also will continue to board passengers from its other gates in Terminal A.
  • Terminal B on Schedule for Full Opening in Mid-2010.  Construction is making fast progress on Terminal B, and we expect open the new terminal next summer.

Rental Car Garage

  • Rapid Progress on Consolidated Rental Car Garage.  Currently construction crews are placing the fourth deck of the ConRAC, and all seven decks are scheduled to be in place this summer.  The north helix that will be the entry point has been built to its full height, and the south exit helix is under construction.  The new structure is across the road from the new Terminal B, and it will have 3000 spaces for rental car companies and 350 spaces for public parking. Project completion currently is scheduled fall 2010.

New Escalators at Terminal A
We opened the new north escalator lobby at Terminal A last month, completing the first stage of replacement and renovation.  The new lobby is much more open and spacious, and now includes two new wider escalators that are more efficient and easier for passengers and their luggage. The replacement of the south escalator lobby is under way now, and is scheduled to be completed by April.  All Terminal A passengers can use the North escalators near the American Airlines curbside check-in location until the south escalators are completed later this spring.

Over the next two months crews will be replacing the sidewalk and installing security bollards in front of Terminal A. The first stage started this month in front of the North Ticket Lobby and should be completed by the end of February.  The second stage in front of the South Ticket Lobby will then start, finishing in April before the opening of the new street-level ticket lobbies. During construction of each section, the Departures curb will be shifted for dropping off passengers.

Taxi Staging at Terminal A Has Shifted to New Location
Passengers at Terminal A now can find taxis outside at the south end of the garage by the Ground Transportation Island.  The taxi staging area was relocated in December.   Location of the new staging area can be seen here.  Door-to-door shuttles are still located inside the south end of the Terminal A Garage.

Navigating Airport Roads
Our roadways have changed in recent months, and there continues to be heavy construction equipment using Airport roads.  To help you navigate the Airport’s during our construction, here’s a map of the current Airport roadway configuration.

As always, please watch out for other drivers, pedestrians, and construction workers.  Airport parking control and traffic officers are there to help keep traffic flowing safely, so please pay attention to them, too, especially during peak times.

New Construction Photos
Current construction photos of the work at the New Airport can be found in the Construction Update section at SJC Construction Photos.  We’re making good progress on the major elements of the Terminal Area Improvement Program, and we continue to stay on track to finish on schedule and on budget in 2010.

Construction Schedules are Subject to Change
Our $1.3 billion project to modernize the Airport is complex and moving very fast, and our construction schedules are subject to continuing revision.  We will keep updating the public and our customers about the project details as they occur, but please bear with us as we adjust schedules for the project.  We appreciate your patience, and thank you for flying San José while we build The New Airport for you.
